5 Tips to Avoid a Toddler Meltdown at an Outdoor Family Photo Session in Gig Harbor

I see you, Mom. The dry erase calendar in the kitchen is mapped out perfectly with everyone’s schedules, you just prepped dinner for tonight, and maybe you squeezed in a quick pilates workout.

You take great care of your family and most likely you’re the designated family photographer, because you want to capture as many memories of your family as possible before they’re grown.

But, are you in the pictures?

Finding a Gig Harbor family photographer for an outdoor photo shoot…

…who can create images of your favorite people, as they truly are, doesn’t have to be that hard.

You can read about my tips for finding the right photographer here.

And if you’re wondering how to help ensure that your session goes smoothly, here are a few simple ideas that work wonders!

TIP 1: EARLY TO BED

Sounds obvious, I know. A well-rested toddler is a happy toddler. Sometimes my husband and I let our 3 year-old sneak out of bed and snuggle on the couch while we watch The Office late at night, and it’s the cutest thing in the world when she asks, “What’s Pam doing?” But boy-oh-boy, do we pay for her grumpy demeanor the next day! Try putting your little bunnies to bed early the night before your session if at all possible.

TIP 2: SNACKS, SNACK AND MORE SNACKS

I’m sure you feed your kids. But there are probably days when your pre-schooler would rather reenact a heated debate between Woody and Buzz than take a lunch break. A snack before your photographer arrives makes it less likely that kids will become irritable during the session. And if they do, it’s absolutely OK. I plan on taking breaks while I’m photographing a family and I’m never worried about how long the session is. I’d much rather spend extra time making beautiful pictures than look at my watch. (Plus, I don’t wear a watch

TIP 3: WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR PHOTO SESSION

When I was little, my Mom used to dress me in the most uncomfortable clothes in the entire world. True story. Undershirt, dress, cardigan, wool tights (yep, I said wool!) and patent-leather Mary Janes. I’m itchy just thinking about it.

Dress comfortably! Fancy-pants are great for parties and weddings, but you don’t have to be “dressed up” to look fantastic in your photos. Try choosing clothes that allow all of you to run, jump and play rather than restrictive clothes.

TIP 4: IF YOU CHILL OUT THEY WILL, TOO

Remember to take time for yourself prior to your outdoor family photo session. If you feel good about how you look, and you’re rested and relaxed, those good vibes will help create a happy mood for all.

TIP 5: LET’S MAKE IT FUN!

Think of your family photo session as a special time set aside to play with your kids and enjoy all the silly, adorable things they say and do. Years from now you’ll be so glad you stopped to capture these moments that go by in the blink of an eye.
